In human beings, endometrium undergoes 400–500 menstrual cycles during a woman’s reproductive lifetime. Endometrium is divided into upper two third- functional layer that contains glands and luminal epithelium and the lower basal layer that contains bases of the endometrial glands. Latest theory on endometrial regeneration model postulates that stem cell, possible bone marrow-derived, located in the vascular or perivascular areas, especially around the spiral arterioles in both basal and functional layer contribute to endometrial regeneration. The completion of endometrial regeneration is estrogen dependent, under the stimulation of cytokines and growth factors, such as transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-α), epidermal growth factor (EGF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF). The balance between MMPs and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) play a key role in endometrial remodeling.
